The Quest for Knowledge 500 piece puzzle. The first documented appreance of the Flammarion engraving is in 1888 (The atmosphere: popular meteorology) by Camille Flammarion. The engraving is a composite of images from different historical periods and is possibly the work of Flammarion (1842-1925), a French astronomer who also studied the occult and wrote novels. A crater on the moon and one on Mars have been named after him.
