Flaming Star Nebula (IC 405)
Lying in the winter constellation of Auriga, the Flaming Star Nebula shows, in this McDonald Observatory image, a complex pattern of blue and red. The red areas, called emission nebula, are areas of hydrogen gas that emit light after absorbing the energy of nearby stars. The blue areas, called reflection nebula, do not absorb enough stellar energy to glow on their own but reflect the light of nearby stars. 8x10 inches, color. (Tom Montemayor)
